The New York Times - Fans Hope Suns Can Rise Again on 'Star Trek'
Personally I'm a big Star Trek fan. I think most of everything I've learned about everyday life, I've learned from Star Trek. I believe mankind is good, and the human race will stand the test of time because we have the ability to overcome all odds. Star Trek has taught me this. It has shown me that there is nothing I cannot do if I really want to. It has helped me over come may obstacles with the use of logic, or on rare occasions when logic doesn't work, my gut feeling.
I know I'm not the only one passionate about Star Trek. Logically I say let "Enterprise" run it's course then let it die off. That way when it comes back it will come back big and make a lot of people happy (and others a lot of money). On the other hand, emotionally, I want it to go on. I want to see the crew of "Enterprise" make it on the big screen. I want a Star Trek series set in the 29th century. I want to see James T. Kirk come back. I want to see a movie that encompasses The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Enterprise (Voyager was intentionally left out). I even want to see shows about other people in the Star Trek universe. I know most of all that will be left to fan fiction, but that doesn't make me want it any less. I also know, having is not so pleasing as wanting. It is not logical, but often true.

I have to create a little drama (I'm still waiting for my next MMORPG to come out)
You Said:

I say:
Take the following (yes/no) survey:
1. If i found a wallet on the ground with 5 one hundred dollar bills I would search desperately for the owner so I could return it.
2. I would cheat on my college final exam if I knew it was the difference between me failing or passing college.
3. It's raining and dark and I'm driving through an unpopulated dangerous part of town at 2 A.M. I run into a pedestrian (not in a crosswalk) with my vehicle. I would stop and render assistance.
4. I'm 4 years old and have been told NOT to raid the cookie jar. I obey my parents.
5. I'm 4 years old and am hungry. My mother takes me by the hand through the grocery store. I would never steal a candy off the shelf.
Should I go on?
6. I live in New York and the city just suffered a masive power outage. I go outside and tell the looters they are wrong for stealing and try my best to stop them.
7. I'm in the backseat of my car on lovers lane with my fiancee and would never cross any physical bounderies her father has established for his daughter.
8. I'm driving down the road and someone blatantly cuts me off in traffic just to get in front of me only to slam on the breaks. I wave happily with a smile as I pass by.
9. My best friend has betrayed my friendship. I treat them with the utmost kindness and concern.
10. I got punched in the face for saying something. I turn the other cheek.
My argument: From the day we are born, throughout our youngest years, we, display bad behavior. That's why our jails are filling up. That's why the IRS cant keep up with the cheaters, thats why we have a show called "Cheaters".
Put two 4 year olds in one room with one toy. See what happens "naturally".
:-)
Your argument that mankind is basically bad, is a compelling argument. None the less I still believe mankind is basically good. Granted, all we ever hear about are the bad things, but what about the good?
Granted I'm a nerd and can only relate this subject to computer stuff, but take open source for example. It's free for everyone to use and change, as long as you keep the good thing going. That doesn't make close source bad, but it's a good thing that enriches all of our lives. When was the last time you hear of one person that does something ground breaking? It's usually a team of people, or someone who was inspired from the works of others and built off of it.
It amazes me what can be accomplished when a few individuals seek a common goal. I find myself seeking others opinions on projects, because I know I'll disagree with them, but they'll make me think of something I haven't thought of before.
If you want to get down to it, let's move to one of my favorite subjects... discrimination of commonly overlooked things. In this case, you're discriminating against humans. Because I'm a human being, you think I'm a bad person. I say judge me on my actions and nothing else. Not my race, not my religion, not my sex, not my occupation, not by anything other than my actions. Granted I'm not perfect. I will make mistakes in life, but I will learn from those mistakes. It is our experiences in life that makes us who we are.
On a side note. I'm not a 4 year old. Since then I've made a lot of mistakes and learned many new things.
OK, lets take two infants. They haven't been taught right or wrong. Let's raise them together. We will not correct them or there thinking. No discipline. No spankings. No "You shouldn't do that Jonny". We will NOT influence their behavior one way or the other at all. We raise them in the same environment, same food, same clothes. The only difference is their personalities. From age 2 on up we will start giving them toys. The only catch is there will only be one toy to share between them. As they grow in age we will replace the toy with a newer, nicer, toy. The toy will always match their age/mental state. The only thing is we will only put ONE toy in the room.
What do you think will happen?
I would stake my life on it, that as they grow up the toy becomes a source of strife. Eventually unchecked one WILL kill the other. Remember, killing, or not killing has not been taught as either good or bad.
Let nature take its course. Without restraint, discipline, and training humans are without a doubt sinners by nature.
If what you say was true" "Humans are basically good" then we would live in a utopian world already. People would naturally treat each other well, with respect and kindness. People wouldn't be starving anywhere because by nature all the rich people in Beverly Hills would be giving compassionate people not selfish money hoarders. There would be no sadness in the world because people would "naturally" stay married and not cheat on each other. The list could go on and on...
I think that by just looking around we can see what kind of world we live in. Just think about todays date. 9/11/2004. Yes, people are naturally good. :-)
And I seriously thought I was going to be able to make it all the way through the day without a 9/11 reference.
